More than 5,000 children fall from a window each year, with window falls being considered one of the top five home hazards according to Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Window falls are more common during the spring and summer, when the windows have a tendency to be opened. Open windows can be dangerous for young children if they are not properly supervised. While most windows have insect screens, they are not designed to support a child’s weight or to prevent them from falling out of the window. This is why installing a Window Opening Control Device (WOCD) is very important as a fall prevention measure.
A WOCD is an important safeguard to help children stay safe and need to comply with ASTM F2090. ASTM F2090-compliant window opening control devices (WOCDs) and guards can help prevent a child’s fall by limiting how far the window can open but are also equipped with release devices to allow for escape in case of an emergency.
